College Speciality Advisory Committee on Gastroenterology
This is an important committee, which is charged with making recommendations to the College about training in our discipline. The composition of the committee is as follows:
| Chair | Professor Ian Booth ( ex officio ); BSPGN President |
| BSPGN Training Advisor | Professor John Walker-Smith |
| Deputy Advisor | Dr Deirdre Kelly |
| General Paediatric Representative | Dr Susan Hobbins |
| Representative from adult gastroenterology | Dr Roger Chapman |
| Trainee Representative | Dr David Casson |
The committee has been asked to carry out the following tasks:
John Walker-Smith and Deirdre Kelly have already provided a curriculum which we have approved, and the first meeting of the committee takes place in September when we will agree the process for accrediting training centres and their posts. We discussed this issue in the BSPGN Council in July and agreed that it would almost certainly involve a visitation by the training advisors (or their deputies). We hope to have evaluated two or three of the larger training centres by the time of the York meeting next year. There is some urgency here, not least because our trainees are currently in the dark about whether their post is going to be approved or not.
Please return the census form enclosed with this letter!
The Professor Alex P Mowat PhD Studentship
I would particularly like to draw your attention to the enclosed literature which provides details about a PhD studentship in memory of Alex Mowat. You will be pleased to learn that the Society has already made a donation of £1000 to the Trust, but in addition, you may wish to make a personal donation in memory of Alex.
Recent BSPGN meetings
Huw Jenkins organised the first, and highly successful national training symposium in Usk in October last year. Paediatric gastroenterology is one of the few paediatric specialities to be active in this respect and these meetings are an important showcase for paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology, particularly for potential trainees. The second meeting is being organised by John Puntis and Simon Newell and takes place later this year. I have attached a flyer for this to the Newsletter. Do please encourage your trainees to attend.
As one would expect of a meeting held in a city built on whisky and oil, the Winter Meeting in Aberdeen was hugely rewarding. Our thanks must go to Huw Jenkins and to Mike Bisset, together with all their colleagues who made our two most recent meetings so successful and enjoyable.
Secretary’s Annual Report
As everybody knows by now, the real work on Council and within the Society is done by our Secretary, Peter Sullivan. I am again most grateful to Peter for all his efficiency and energy over the last 12 months and attach a copy of his Annual Report.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Register
The Society is supporting an IBD Register, based at the Royal Free Hospital. It is currently being piloted at a few centres but will move to national coverage shortly. Further information is available from David Casson at RFH.
Associate Membership
You will recall that at our last AGM in York this year, we agreed to admit Associate Members. Since then, several Associate Members have joined, mainly from nursing and dietetic backgrounds.
Do please encourage your colleagues in these and other disciplines to be come associate members and to attend our meetings. Applications for membership can be obtained from Peter Sullivan.
